5 best bum bags
It goes by many aliases – bum bag, hip pack, fanny pack, and all the rest – but this carrier is handy piece of kit. Whether you’re traversing the city on a sightseeing mission, trekking from stage to stage on the festival grounds or simply getting from A to B, a large backpack can be a cumbersome annoyance.
And that’s where the increasingly fashionable bum bag (we’ll it call it that for the sake of consistency) comes in. On our list, we’ve picked out a range of different styles, suited to different circumstances. Some focus on the style while still offering a lot by way of function – perfect for festivals – others come from outdoor brands and designed for walking, while some are packed with anti-theft technology, and are therefore aimed primarily at the sightseer. Some of them are just excellent all-rounders.
We’ve tested each of them both in the UK and abroad, in the city, while on hikes and at festivals. Our main considerations were capacity, durability, style and comfort.
1. Eastpak Bundel Into
This may just be the closest thing we have to a Tardis on our list. We managed to cram into it a rain jacket, sun cream, a sunglasses case, a wallet, a passport, a phone and a portable charger – and even then it didn’t feel that full up. It has three main compartments, with a main zipped pocket at the front, a smaller one in front of that and a discreet one at the back. It sat comfortably when worn, especially thanks to the adjustable-length strap which means it can be worn across the body, and is sturdily built. Comes in five different designs.
2. Topshop Mirror Embellished Bumbag
When it comes to festival accessories, Topshop is a reliable option if you’re looking for the latest on-trend designs. Our pick for bum bags is this mirror-encrusted version with an additional front zip pocket that’s the ideal size for your phone. The main compartment has a small pocket inside too, which would fit loose change or notes in. The black strap feels secure and sits comfortably around your waist, while it’s also easy to adjust. Although our favourite is this purple shade, it’s also available in black and mint green.
3. Skinnydip Dusk Bumbag
If there’s ever a time for glitter, festivals are it. This one from the fun British accessories brand is on the small side, but it will still fit sunnies, your mobile and some bits of make-up and the zipped front pocket will house cash. The whole thing is compact enough to fit under your waterproof if the weather isn’t playing ball. This style also comes in a hologram design as well as a pink-sequinned version.
4. Arc’Teryx Maka 1 Waistpack
This is a small but practical bag from the Canadian outdoor specialist Arc’Teryx. The zipped front pocket is the perfect size to slot in a smartphone, while we managed to stuff a fair amount into the main pocket, which is split into two compartments. There is an extra, small pocket to be found within the comfortable padding at the back, although this doesn’t have a zip so we wouldn’t recommend storing any valuables in there. An easily adjustable strap means you can wear this one across-body as well.
5. Asos Leather Classic Bumbag
This stylish white leather bum bag is ideal for pairing with festival-inspired outfits. The tassel zip adds some flair, not to mention making it easier to access your essentials. Although there are no inner pockets, there’s plenty of space for your phone, money, torch, tissues and any other smaller valuables you wish to store. It’s not the most practical colour but it’s easily wiped clean with a damp cloth (or face wipe) and this bum bag adjusts to your size using the buckle fastening at the back.
